Eid’l Fitr (Feast of Ramadhan) in the Philippines

Another long and restful weekend is expected by the working class Filipinos this coming Friday due to the recent announcement issued by the Malacañang Presidential office.

President Benigno S. Aquino III , by virtue of the powers vested in him by law,  declare Friday, 9 August 2013, as a regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Eid’l Fitr (Feast of Ramadhan). The Eid’l Fitr Prayer shall be performed depending on the result of the moon-sighting activity on 7 August 2013.

Republic Act No. 9177 declared Eid’l Fitr (Feast of Ramadhan) as a regular holiday throughout the country; Eid’l Fitr is celebrated by the Muslim World for three (3) days after the end of the month of fasting; to promote cultural understanding and integration, the entire Filipino nation should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr; and in order to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness, it is necessary to declare Friday, 9 August 2013, as a regular holiday throughout the country.

Eid ul-Fitr is an annual Muslim holiday commemorating the end of the Ramadan or the ‘Islamic holy month of fasting and purification’.

The end of Ramadan coincides with the Islamic festival of Eid ul-Fitr. An Arabic word which means “Festival of Breaking the Fast”, Eid ul-Fitr is characterized by food sharing and the giving of alms to the poor. Participants put on their best clothes. A communal prayer is held to start the celebration, followed by a large feast and the visiting of loved ones.
