In parallel with the government to resolve the climate change, World Bank (WB) extends it aid to pig farmers in the Philippines.

World Bank with the assistance of Spanish Carbon Fund under Methane Recovery from Waste Management project of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) program of activity, will help those in the piggery industry.

Thru Land Bank of the Philippines, it provide a financial incentive for the purchase in piggery wastewater treatment facilities for proper disposal of pig manure and capture methane gas for electricity generation.

In this way, respectively, the World Bank, reduced the increase of methane gas a greenhouse gas that can cause climate change.

"This is the first program of activities from the Philippines to be registered and it is the first registered biogas PoA in the animal waste sector in south-east Asia, a region home to a significant number of the world's pigs," says ni Mr. Nick Bowden, Carbon Finance Specialist of VVB.

"LANDBANK is paving the way for the scaling up of environmentally friendly technologies that reduce the negative impacts of livestock waste on water, air, human health and the climate in general, not just across the Philippines, but throughout the region," he added.

"We are pleased to work with the WB on this project because we are hitting two goals at the same time: providing financial support to farmers in the countryside which is our core mandate - while contributing to efforts at mitigating climate change," said LANDBANK President at Chief Executive Officer Gilda E. Pico

"Climate change poses a serious threat to development especially to the ability of the poor to move out of poverty. That' s why initiatives like these are very important," says Mr. Motoo Konishi, Country Director of WB.
