ATM Card Safety Tips

Written By kusina101 on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 | Tuesday, August 19, 2014

Protect yourself from fraudulent practices and reduce the risk of fraud through the following:

1. Guard your PIN.
Memorize your Personal Identification Number (PIN) and avoid selecting PIN that relates to your personal information such as birthdays and telephone number. If you must write it down, do not attach it to your ATM card or anywhere near it. If possible, change your PIN regularly.

2. Handle your transactions personally.
Do not ask anyone to do your ATM transactions for you.

3. Protect your ATM Card as if it is cash.
Your card is for your own personal use so do not lend it to other people. Keep it within your possession and control like how you handle your cash. Report lost or stolen cards immediately.

4. Be alert. Think of your own safety when using an ATM.

Take into consideration the location of the ATM during transactions. Be mindful of the people around you and avoid using poorly lit and deserted ATMs.

5. Check ATM for any fraudulent devices attached.
Inspect the machine for any unusual devices attached to it. Be aware of the installation of “skimmer”, hidden cameras and fake PIN pads that are used to copy information from your ATM.

6. Keep records of your transactions.
Take your receipts with you after every transaction and reconcile it with your statement of account.
