34th Camiguin Lanzones Festival

The heat is on in Camiguin Island with the upcoming 34th Lanzones Festival.This island province is synonymous to sweet lanzones. It’s October festivities center on this lucrative industry. Witness how Camiguingnons celebrate in thanksgiving for the bountiful harvest of the sweetest Lanzones which can only be found in Camiguin.

Lanzones, a fleshly fruit abundant in the province of Camiguin, is now in season as the province celebrates the annual Lanzones Festival. After years of study to better improve the shelf life of its renowned fruit, the island now starts introducing a new variety called “camlong” or the Camiguin longkong lanzones.

The camlong is a cross breed of the local variety and longkong – a variety usually grown in Thailand and Indonesia.

Longkong is described to be almost seedless and with a skin or peel that has almost no latex.

The festival commemorates the bountiful harvest of the fruit that is Camiguin’s pride, the luscious “buwahan,” the indigenous name for lanzones.

The locals and tourists enjoy this weeklong celebration with a line-up of activities showcasing the richness culture in Camiguin like Street Dancing, Ground Presentations, Agro-Industrial-Tourism Trade Fair, Festival King and Queen Showdown, different Sporting Events and the elegant Search for the Mutya sa Buahanan.

It is believed that the celebration started with the local legend about a childless couple who wished for a child from a lanzones tree fairy. The fairy granted them a healthy baby boy but the couple forgot to thank her. One day, a suspicious-looking woman approached their child while he was playing. The boy suddenly fell unconscious. His parents thought that it was the lanzones fairy who had enchanted the boy. The couple decided to perform a ritual to appease the fairy and, sure enough, the child became well again.

The following year, the couple invited the neighboring barrio to participate in the thanksgiving ritual. From then on, the ritual became an annual festivity in Camiguin to recreate the ceremonies done by the ancient forefathers of the island to the gods that provide good weather and abundant harvest.
