The top science and engineering universities of the Philippines,
represented by their presidents, met with Silicon Valley visionary and
PhilDev Chairman Dado Banatao last February 2, 2012 at the Ateneo de
Manila University in Quezon City. Comprised of eight universities, the
Engineering Research and Development for Technology (ERDT) Consortium is
tasked to produce the country's best and brightest scientists and
engineers through graduate and post-graduate-level scholarships. The
eight universities in the ERDT Consortium are Ateneo de Manila, Central
Luzon State, De La Salle, Mapua Institute of Technology, Mindanao State,
University of the Philippines - Diliman and Los Baños, and University
of San Carlos.
Formed in 2007, the ERDT Consortium has been tasked to address the
need for researchers, scientists and engineers (RSEs) to spur and
sustain the economic development of the Philippines. The ERDT Consortium
works towards this goal by providing scholarships for students pursuing
their Masteral and Doctoral Degrees in the fields of science and
engineering, giving priority to areas or tracks that address the needs
of the country. The scholarship includes full tuition coverage at any
ERDT university (or non-ERDT university approved by the ERDT
Consortium), a research grant of P200,000 for MA and P400,000 for PhD
scholars, a stipend of P15,000 per month for MA scholars and P23,000 per
month for PhD scholars, book allowance of P5,000 per semester, thesis
allowance of P30,000 or a dissertation allowance of P60,000, as well as
transportation allowance of P10,000 per year.
Fully supported by the
previous administration, and now by the administration of President
Benigno Aquino III, the Philippine government has committed to support
5,000 scholarships in five years. The ERDT Consortium in collaboration
with the Department of Science and Technology, through the Science
Education Institute, also offers foreign doctorate and post-doctorate
scholarships, visiting professorship grants, and research enrichment
programs.
